Slotbound Jester Awakening: Summon and Awaken Guide
Quick answer
To get the Jester, line up three Jester-hat symbols on a winning line — but first roll the Joker Seed core, because the hat symbol stays locked at 0% until a core unlocks it. The Jester arrived in the v0.4.0 update as a Special-rarity unit that the developer explicitly calls very difficult to obtain, alongside a brand-new Awakening system. Everything below reflects the v0.4.x demo as played by the community; the full game enters Early Access on November 10.

Prerequisites
- You need a run long enough to farm spins and cores. Players who have landed the Jester run Open Forest on hard, because its 30 waves give enough spins to hit the odds; the Deep Cave stage in the demo only reaches wave 20.
- The Jester-hat symbol is locked at the bottom of the slot machine. Hover over it and you will see 0% — no amount of spinning summons the Jester until cores unlock the hat.
- Save your gold for core rerolls instead of shopping. Both players who documented a summon skipped the shop for most of the run so they could reroll relic offers until Jester-related cores appeared.
Step 1: Unlock the hat symbol with Joker Seed
Roll cores until you get Joker Seed, a passive card that gives each slot a 1.5% chance to show a Jester hat. In Dabble's fully documented run, this appeared after several rerolls and instantly unlocked the hat symbol's chance. A hat appearing on the board by itself is not a summon — it only means the symbol can now show up.
Step 2: Stack hat opportunities
Joker Seed alone leaves the odds brutal, so keep rolling cores for the scheduled hats. Players report the following effects:
- Torn Note: every sixth spin is reported to contain one Jester hat.
- Black Note: the first spin of each wave is reported to contain one Jester hat.
These scheduled hats do not summon anything on their own; they hand you extra boards where a line might connect.
Step 3: Raise the odds and keep alignment tools
- Wild Card: each slot gets an additional 2% chance to show a Jester symbol, and a win containing a Jester summons one extra unit of the winning symbol. With Joker Seed active this pushes the per-slot chance to 3.5%.
- Rebound Axis: after nudging a reel, you may nudge that same reel one additional time — vital for lining up two hats into three.
- Crooked Fang: after losing a spin, lets you swap one symbol with the center symbol, another way to salvage a near-miss.
Step 4: Summon by aligning three hats
Spin and watch every board
With Joker Seed plus the scheduled-hat cores running, most waves will show at least one hat. The odds of a natural line are tiny — Dabble estimated roughly one in a thousand even fully stacked — so most summons come from nudges.
Save your nudges for two-hat boards
Keep every nudge unused until a board shows two hat symbols that could connect on a winning line. A nudge only moves symbols within the same column, so check whether the third hat can actually slide into a row, column or diagonal before spending it.
Nudge the hat into the line
Nudge the reel down until the third hat lands on a row, column or diagonal. In Dabble's run, a two-hat board at wave 25 plus one downward nudge completed the line and the glowing Jester unit appeared on the field.
Verify the summon
The summoned unit reads as the Jester with the Two-Face Card ability — it randomly uses Prank (the enemy's next basic attack retargets) or Cheer (one ally immediately performs a basic attack). Base stats observed: 90 HP, 32 damage, 20 attack speed, 140 range — a back-line support-style ranged unit.
If a board shows three hats that are not aligned, check whether Rebound Axis or Crooked Fang can fix it; otherwise treat it as a lost opportunity and keep spinning. Expect failed runs — the second player who documented the hunt never landed one.
Step 5: Awaken the Jester
Awakening is a separate system added in v0.4.0: hover over any unit to see its ascension level, and awakening unlocks at unit levels 30, 60 and 100, granting an extra buff at each threshold. The observed first awakening card for the Jester granted +10 range with a nearby ally ahead, plus Ferret delivery bonuses.
Feed the Jester levels
Merge every spare unit into the Jester the way you would any carry. In Dabble's run the Jester climbed from level 18 through 50+ by absorbing fodder, crossing the 30 and 60 thresholds and picking up awakening cards each time.
Pick the promotion and awakening branches
The observed first promotion offers Trickster (charms the nearest non-boss enemy for 3 seconds) or Ferret Tamer (a ferret delivers cards that cut allies' skill cooldowns). Later tiers upgrade the ferret to reach two allies. Choose the branch matching your team; Dabble went Ferret Tamer and reached Ring Master.
Push to tier three
Full awakening to level 100 is possible but expensive — Dabble reached tier three before the final boss and called it run-defining. Positioning matters: the Jester cannot use ferrets on itself, so keep an ally ahead of it for the range bonus cards and place it where its 140+ range covers the lane.
FAQ
How do I trigger the Slotbound Jester awakening tiers?
Awakening unlocks at unit level 30, 60 and 100. Merge absorbed units into the Jester to raise its level, then pick a bonus card at each threshold. Tier three was reached in demo footage by funneling every spare unit into the Jester during the late waves.
Why does the Jester symbol show 0% chance?
The hat is locked until you roll the Joker Seed core, which unlocks a 1.5% chance per slot. Before that, the symbol simply cannot appear, which is why spinning for the Jester before Joker Seed is wasted gold.
What are all the Jester cores?
From demo playthroughs: Joker Seed (1.5% per slot), Torn Note (hat every sixth spin), Black Note (hat on each wave's first spin), Wild Card (+2% per slot and extra summons), plus Rebound Axis and Crooked Fang for alignment. Dabble believed that set was complete or near-complete, but that is a player estimate, not an official list.
Can Old Crown boost the Jester symbol?
Players report it cannot — Old Crown's selected-symbol boost does not apply to the Jester hat, so don't spend rerolls expecting it to.
Check note: summon conditions, cores and awakening thresholds come from Dabble's first-hand demo recordings ("I Found the Jester… Then FULLY AWAKENED It" and "Legendary Items, Awakening, & the Hunt for the Jester") and player discussion; the Jester's addition, rarity and the Awakening system are confirmed in the official v0.4.0 Steam announcement and the official Steam page. The complete core list and the Old Crown limitation remain unconfirmed by the developer, and exact odds may change when Early Access launches on November 10.
